The little jewels in our life need a nutritious and balanced food. I had shared few kid friendly recipes when I first started to blog but haven’t posted any special recipe for kids for a while now. I have been receiving many requests to share fussy toddler food ideas and recipes over and over. To honor your request, I’ll share toddler and kid friendly recipes from time to time. I hope the recipes are helpful and the kid(s) in your home love at least few of them starting with this vibrant jewel pilaf. This rice is kid approved and fussy eater tested. On a side note, moms and dads also love this rice 🙂
The brilliant golden raisins, fiery red ruby like cranberries, amber colored apricots make this rice a dazzling addition to a kid’s menu. Like every other toddler and preschooler, R is very temperamental with her food. This rice, however, is a different story. The rich slightly sweet, a bit tart flavor of this rice is a meal I can offer her without a fight. Feel free to add emerald like green peas, orange sapphire like small carrot cubes go ahead. I reserve the vegetables for a different dish that I hope to share soon.
Raisins are naturally packed with vitamins and minerals. Dried apricots are an excellent source of several essential nutrients, including potassium, fiber and antioxidant carotenoids. Cranberries are very nutritious and are among the least allergenic of all foods. The vibrant shades of these dried fruits in the jewel pilaf add color to kids plates naturally.
I hope your picky eater, even the fussiest ones will love this colorful, nutritious and delicious rice. You will love it too, because it is quick to make and you will have no complain eating the left over, if there remains any. Send the kids to a treasure hunt to find jewels while they enjoy this fabulous pilaf.
- 2 tablespoon butter or oil
- 1 tablespoon onion, sliced
- 1 green cardamom (optional)
- 1 small piece of cinnamon (optional)
- ½ cup rice
- ½ teaspoon salt or according to taste
- 1 cup hot water
- ½ cup dried jewel fruits, cut into pieces (apricot, golden raisin, cranberry)
- Wash rice and drain all water.
- In a deep pan, heat butter or oil. Add the onion slices and fry till slightly golden.
- Add rice, cardamom, cinnamon and fry about 1-2 minutes.
- Add salt and the hot water. At the sight of the first bubble, reduce heat to low.
- Add the fruits, cover the pan and cook until desired softness is achieved depending on your child’s taste.
Feel free to add a green chili if your child can tolerate.
Cut the dried fruits in small pieces so your child can safely chew.
Depending on your child’s age, if you need to make the rice extra mushy, you can add additional ½ cup of water.
The rice can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Feel free to add other fruits and vegetables per liking such as green peas, carrot cubes, corn, etc.

i noticed that kids (and my picky mister) are just a little bit more enthusiastic when something has lots of texture and color. we really eat with our eyes, no? 🙂
Lail Hossain says
You are correct, Francesca. Kids love texture and color. It’s one reason I try to offer two or three kinds of different food to my little girl instead of a bowl full of one item. We do eat with our eyes!
