‘Tis the season for apple pie! If you are looking for an easy homemade apple pie recipe to bake and have fun decorating (with or without your children), you’ve landed in the right place. This simple yet delicious pie is filled with fresh apples and warm spices for a homemade pie filling, and store brought pie crust to save you time. Each bite of the eye catching decorative apple pie is filled with sweetness of delicious apples and warmth of cinnamon.
Most apple pie recipes call for cooking the apple filling. My family doesn’t like runny pie filling, so this pie doesn’t require you to cook the pie filling. And that means less prep time and more family time.
To avoid a mushy apple pie, choose firm, tart, and sweet apple varieties. Tart and sweet apples add depth of flavor to the pie, while the firmness helps the apples hold their shape through the cooking process. Granny Smith is my go to apple for pies. I often mix in 1-2 Pink Lady for a little more sweetness.
One of our fall favorite activity is to make pies together as a family. A die-hard fan of the Great British Bake off, my daughter wanted to make a decorative pie. So, we took out our Ramadan lantern cookie cutter set, whipped up some creative juice and used scrapped pastry strips to add some decor.
