Hajj is an integral part of Eid ul Adha. And the Kaaba is heart of Hajj. Crating Kaabah related crafts with your children for Eid al Adha is a great way to teach them about this sacred space. The goal of this hajj craft is to teach your child about the the Kiswa, the cloth that covers the Kaaba. The kiswa holds a special place in the hearts of all Muslims.
Did you know that the kiswa wasn’t always black? Various colors were used during different periods of time including white, green and even red. The Kiswa of today is made of 670 kg of high-quality silk and the manufacturing process takes around eight months. While there are many apparent gold inscriptions on different parts of the current Kiswa, if you look closely, the black kiswa has Allah”, “la ilaha illalla” inscribed among other inscriptions. As the Kiswa is replaced on a yearly basis, pieces of the old Kiswa are presented as gifts to certain organizations, countries and diplomats.
Use these facts to inspire your children to creatively imagine, and design the kaaba popup card. Encourage them to use different materials such as glitter, lace, washi tape, etc.
Instruction
Combine these instructions with your imagination and creativity for best results.
Material:
- Template
- Scissors
- One 11x17inch cardstock, construction paper or regular paper.
(If you don’t have this size paper, scale the template at 60% before printing and use a letter/A4 size paper.) - Craft paint or markers or crayon
- GlueGlitter (optional)
Steps:
- Download and print the template.
- Fold the template in half along the fold marks. For the kaaba, fold back and the Masjid al Haram part, fold inward.
- Cut the images.
- Color/paint and design the kiswa/kabaa. Be creative and feel free to use glitter, puffy paint, etc. If you prefer, you can do step 3 after designing the kiswa.
- Now, fold the 11×17 cardstock (or construction/regular paper, whichever you are using) in half.
- Fold the base of the painted pieces.
- Add glue to the Kabaa base fold and glue the base diagonally on the cardstock.
- Repeat with second piece.
- When you close the card, it should close and the Kabaa should pop-up when you open it back up.
You are very much welcome to share your craft project to With A Spin Facebook page and/or instagram and use hashtag #WithASpin with your child’s name and age and we will put up a gallery roundup showcasing their creativity. At a minimum, I would love to know if you tried this with your child and had a great time together.
