Year after year families do so many sweet things with their kids as back to school traditions. The first day of school is such a great time of the year to capture a child’s growth! It’s an exciting time when things are fresh and new for kids. It is also a time of the year when children can be a bit anxious and nervous about the new teacher or new grade. Establishing fun first day of school traditions makes back to school more exciting and easy transition for your children.
We’ve been repeating certain first day of school activities since pre-school. Now they have become back to school traditions for our family. This year’s back-to-school season may look more than a little different from the previous years, but you can still celebrate with some of these ideas for back-to-school traditions.
Family Prayer
Start the new school year with gratitude and thanking Allah swt and praying for a blessed year. Before going to bed or the morning of first day, take time to pray as a family for each child, and for yourself as each family member may be facing different challenges throughout the school year.
Take Cool Photos
What’s the best way to preserve growth of your child and the first day of school memory than framing the highlights of the first day in photos. There are so many creative ways to commemorate the occasion – from chalkboards to t-shirts and more. Every year I create a back to school sign with my daughter’s favorite things to do, what she wants to be when she grows up, her favorite color and a few more things. It’s fabulous to look back at her growth and see how she changes year to year.
Read A Special Book
New books for a new year at school is a must have. We love reading the classic “Here I Come” picture book for the appropriate grade the night before. Its a great way to get your child ready to start the new year. Other great choices are Oh, The Places You’ll Go and the Miss Nelson collection!
Special First Day of School Breakfast
Celebrate the big day with your child’s favorite breakfast foods. You can make it extra special with back to school theme and include apples, pancakes in the shape of grade level. My daughter loves waffles, and often asks for it. We usually make a big batch and freeze. It’s easy to just warm it up for her. We also join in with breakfast or morning tea/coffee.
First Day Of School Lunch
Each year, either my husband or I take the time off to meet my daughter during lunch time on first day of school. With virtual schooling this year, I am planning to give her a note of encouragement during lunchtime. My daughter loves encouraging notes in her lunchbox during school year so I try to sneak in something 1-2 times a week. You can create hand written notes or get a box of motivational cards and use them.
After School Surprise
Plan a surprise for your kids after school on the first day. Change it up every year so they don’t know what’s coming. Whether you decide to go out for ice cream, visit a water park, a special dinner or give them a special treat, they’ll surely be excited! This year, we included school theme cookies and they are a big hit.
Party Before The First Day Of School
Every year, I usually kick off the season with a back to school party with few of her friends. Nothing fancy, just a playdate type get-togehter. Some years I’ve made all the foods, and there were years when each mom brought something for the kids to share. It’s helpful for the kids to establish a relationship with their fellow classmates before the first day. With a global pandemic, the party didn’t happen this year but we are keeping the other traditions alive.
Celebrate and make back to school special for your kids with first day of school traditions. Establishing a first-day-of-school tradition is a fun way to bond with your child, celebrate a new milestone and start the year off right. Get your children motivated for a fresh start and build lasting memories.
