To reap the full benefit of Ramadan, it is best to start preparing physically, mentally and spiritually ahead of the holy month. And who is better than to follow the example of Prophet Muhammed (s.a.w) who used to devote himself in preparation of Ramadan. Ever wondered, how to prepare for Ramadan like the Prophet (saw)?
Let’s find examples in the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) and learn How we can Prepare For Ramadan Like The Prophet.
1. Fast in Shaban –
‘O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting any month as much as Shaban.’ He said: ‘That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are taken up to the Lord of the worlds, and I like that my deeds be taken up when I am fasting.”’ Sunan an-Nasa’i 2357
Fasting in Sha’ban is a practice run for Ramadan fasting. Starting to fast in Shaban is a great way to prepare the body for fasting in Ramadan and enter the blessed month with strength and vigor.
2. Improve your character –
“Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)” Sahih al-Bhukari 1903
It is very important to start Ramadan with a clean heart and good manners and character.
Practice either speaking good or being silent.
Practice controlling your Nafs. It is one of the most important things to keep in mind especially during this holy month because shaitan is chained during this month.

3. Recite and reflect on the Quran
“The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have two rewards.” Riyad as-salihin 994
Start the habit of reciting the Quran even if it is just half a page everyday, so it’ll become a consistent habit during Ramadan. Catch up on Quran translation and reflect. I highly recommend the Clear Quran.
4. Work on your diet and eating habits –
“It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat what will support his back. If this is not possible, then a third for food, a third for drink, and third for his breath.” Sunan Ibn Majah 3349
As Ramadan nears, its best to refrain from excess or unhealthy eating habits and work on your water intake. Eliminate sugary snacks and empty calories leading up to the month of Ramadan. It’s always best to start reducing caffeine intake few weeks before Ramadan so that the lack of your morning coffee or afternoon tea doesn’t make you sluggish during the first few days of Ramadan.
5. Prepare your supplication list –
“The supplications of three persons are never turned away: a just ruler, a fasting person until he breaks his fast, and the supplication of an oppressed person” Sunan Ibn Majah 1624.
Ramadan is a huge opportunity to pour your heart by making duas while fasting. Amplify your worship and start making a list of duas you want to make and include them as part of your daily prayers. Ask for sincere repentance, and ask for it as if this is your last chance to ask for forgiveness, for the doors of heaven are opened during Ramadan and the doors of Hell are closed.
6. Supplicate at the sight of the Moon
At the sight of the new moon (of the lunar month), the Prophet used to supplicate:
“O Allah, let this moon appear on us with security and faith; with safety and Islam. (O moon!) Your lord and mine is Allah. May this moon be bringing guidance and good”. (Jami` Al-Tirmidhi)
At the sight of the moon for any new lunar month, including Ramadan, the Prophet (saw) made this special supplication. Let’s plan to revive this Sunnah starting Ramadan if not earlier.
7. Revive a sunnah
Revive some sunnah together as a family to make it a habit in Ramadan. Even simple acts such as smiling, repeating the adhan, drinking in three gulps can be rewarded by Allah with the right intention and gratitude in your heart. Start with these easy sunnah that you can star following without much effort.
Allahumma barik lana fi Rajab wa Sha’ban wa ballighna Ramadan.
“O Allah make the months of Rajab and Sha’ban blessed for us and let us reach the month of Ramadan.”
