“Trees are poems the earth writes upon the sky.” – Khalil Gibran
Cooler temps, a light breeze in the air, Pumpkin spice lattes … is Fall finally here?!
Who am I kidding? Fall in Dallas doesn’t really arrive till mid November, Thanksgiving if we’re lucky! However, each year I eagerly await my absolute favorite time of the year, this change of seasons that brings such overwhelming joy, excitement, and anticipation for some of nature’s most beautiful gifts.
There’s something about the colorful tapestry that abounds, the cloudier skies, the cooler days and warmer nights, the sweater weather, cozying up with blankets by the fire, crunching on leaves, playing in pumpkin patches, and eating warm apple pies that makes hearts come alive during this season. Not to mention the unparalleled Fall decor that sprinkles pumpkins everywhere, and finally the ability to enjoy the outdoors without melting in unbearable heat (speaking for the Texans here)!
Each season has its unique wonders, and Fall has a way of inviting us inwards, to refresh our lives in line with nature itself. There is rest from the hustle and bustle of summer as we accustom ourselves to new school and work routines and mentally prepare for the hardships that may await in the winter.
No matter where in the country you reside, (though we envy ya’ll up north!), Fall, with its outwardly changes, often welcomes us to a season of greater quietude and turning inwards, of listening and of reflecting. As we watch leaves change colors and eventually fall, we are reminded to slow down and appreciate the process. Nature’s Divine display illustrates the colorful changes occurring in our own lives, of periods we are passing through, of silent yet beautiful transformations happening within.
Sometimes the periods we are undergoing make no sense at all. They lack purpose, seem challenging beyond our limits, feel unfulfilling, or simply linger on as long seasons of waiting. Perhaps we feel we are stretched and striving with no end in sight, or even moving backwards as we try to decipher what path to tread upon next. Fall, in its majestic splendor, shows us the beauty in waiting, in patiently striving forward, and in trusting that progress exists amidst all the seasons of our lives.
Interestingly, much of our delight from Autumn stems from watching the leaves change colors and then fall. We notice the slow emptying of the trees, wrap ourselves tighter in warmer sweaters, and take in the bareness of it all. It is this willingness of the leaves to let go of their glory that invites the next season. Having shined brightly for a time and barren the special fruits of harvest, Fall kisses us goodbye. We reap its benefits by nourishing and tending to our bodies by escaping into the outdoors.
By letting ourselves go and taking it all in much like nature herself, we can learn to cultivate more gratitude, create more periods of thanksgiving, feasting and gathering, and better cherish all the innumerable blessings we have been given. It is perhaps the magnificent beauty of this season that has an undeniable way of reminding us of the beauty of our Creator Himself. “God is beautiful, and He loves beauty,” we are told time and again. There is no better, outstanding proof of Al-Jamaal and Al-Jalaal than in the season of Fall, where we watch nature’s Divine rhythm perfectly at play and in awe.
So beyond the cute Fall decor you may be putting up, the yummy recipes you are eager to try, and all the Pumpkin Spice lattes and Apple Ciders that await, how else will you be welcoming this most anticipated and wonderful of seasons? What are you looking to refresh in your life, to indulge in and celebrate, to let go of, or to revere in its gifts with more gratitude? Fall is just around the corner, and I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to revel in it all and enjoy its many, many fruits.
How will you be celebrating the season? What are you looking forward to most? We’d love to hear!
