Last Friday during Jumma khutbah, Sheikh Yaser Birjas discussed 10 obstacles that we should all avoid. The reminders were so on point that even my eight year old daughter was nodding in agreement as we were listening. I hope they are a beneficial reminder for you as you set Muslim New year goals.
Here’s the list of 10 obstacles you must avoid to be successful –
1. Weakness in reliance upon Allah swt.
So have tawakkul.
“If you were to rely on Allah as He should be relied on, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds. They go out early in the morning hungry and return in the evening full.”
– At-Tirmidhi
2. Absence of a daily plan.
We are always too busy planning for tomorrow. Not having a vision for the day leads to only go through the chores for the day and not accomplishing much. Thus we are only playing the catching up game. So, avoid unplanned days and plan for every single day.
“Trust in Allah but tie your camel”
– At-Tirmidhi
3. Hanging out with negative people.
Emotions are contagious. Hang with those with strong personal, family and community goals, and aspiration so it rubs off with you in a good way. Mix with people who gives you hope.
“A person will follow his friend’s ways(in religion and lifestyle), you should be careful who you chose your friends”.
– At-Tirmidhi
4. Giving up so quickly.
Don’t be frustrated when you fail. Allah did not promise you will get something today or tomorrow or day after tomorrow. He promised you will get it at some point. We are to keep trying until the time is right.
“A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer, but there is goodness in both of them. Cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart(do not be frustrated)”
– Sahih Muslim
5. Worrying about other people’s opinion.
Do the right thing. Take feedback with open mind, but do not seek validation from people
“Anyone who seeks the pleasure of Allah swt, even it means displeasing the people, Allah swt will take care of them. And whoever seeks the pleasure of the people, even if that means displeasing Allah swt, Allah will leave them for the people.”
– At-Tirmidhi
6. Giving yourself excuses for missed opportunities.
Don’t justify in your mind when your heart knows you are making excuses for yourself. Don’t try to console yourself if you are not able to do good things.
“Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness, even if he presents his excuses.”
Quran 75.14-15
7. Feeling jealous when others succeed.
Instead of being jealous of others, help others to be successful. Be happy when others succeed.
“Do not be envious of one another” – Muslim
Only Allah knows how others success story will transform in the akhira. Keep doing your part. However, there are only two types of people you can be jealous of –
“Only these two people should be envied: A man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously. A man whom Allah has given wisdom and he acts according to it and teaches it to others.”
– Bukhari
8. Ignoring self care.
It’s about time taking care of your self. Seek the pleasure of akhira with Everything you do
“Verily, your own self-has rights over you”
-Sahih Bukhari
9. Being indecisive.
We live in a fast paced society. Each of us are leaders in one way or other. If you are wishy-washy in making a decision, someone will in this fast paced society and move on. Forgive, seek forgiveness, consult and make your decision. And when you have made a decision, put your trust in Allah, and move forward.
10. Stop resisting change.
We age every single second. That’s change and no matter how much we try, we can’t change it. Don’t get comfortable in bad situations. Adapt and get the best out of it. Change starts from inside. We need to believe in it, accept it and move forward.
“Verily ! Allah will never change the condition of the people until they change what is in themselves.”
Quran 13.11
I hope bringing these obstacles to light will enable you to eliminate them and help you to be successful in this life and the next. During the Khtubah, Sh. Yaser also reminded that we are 100 something days away from Ramadan and this is the time we should start to get ready for Ramadan.
P.S. I highly recommend you listen to the Khutbah with your family here.
