Have you ever wondered what robs your home from divine blessings and how to bring it back into your home?
As Muslims we believe that with barakah(Divine blessings) the quality of what we already have increases without it increasing in quantity. For example, food for one being enough to satisfy two, the same $100 getting us more sustenance, being able to do so much in a day that seemed impossible before.
We want our time, wealth, life and our homes to be filled with barakah but how do we attain it? Last Friday Sheikh Yaser Birjas shared some practical ways to increase barakah in your home and I thought to share with you all. If you want to listen to the khutba, you can hear it here.
Here are the Ten Ways To Increase Barakah At Home –

1. Say salaam when you enter your home
“When you enter a house, greet each other with a sincere blessing from God.”
Quran 24:61
Salam is a blessed greeting. When you say salam as you enter your home, you bring blessing into your home. It is one of the easiest ways to bring barakah to our house and to each other.
“when you enter your house, say As- Salamu ‘Alaikum to your family, for it will be a blessing both to you and to your family.”
– Riyad as-Salihin 861
2. Eating together
Another consistent way of bringing barakah at home is to eat together with the family. Gathering together while eating and saying Bismillah before we start makes us get the most out of our food. However, this barakah is unfortunately lost when we eat separately.
“The Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) we eat but we are not satisfied. He said: Perhaps you eat separately. They replied: Yes. He said: If you gather together at your food and mention Allah’s name, you will be blessed in it.”
– Sunan Abi Dawud 3764
3. Maintain the tie of Kinship
Maintain healthy ties with your family, parents, siblings and relatives.
“Whoever loves that he be granted more wealth and that his lease of life be prolonged then he should keep good relations with his Kith and kin.”
– Sahih al-Bukhari 5986
4. Seek forgiveness each day
Say astagfirullah abundantly and seek forgiveness during day and night.
“Ask your Lord for forgiveness; He is Forgiving. He will let loose the sky upon you in torrents. And provide you with wealth and children, and allot for you gardens, and allot for you rivers”.
Quran 71:10
5. Make dua
Raise your hands and make dua from your heart to bring barakah in your home. Make a real connection with your Lord and ask Him to bless whatever He has given you. Ask Allah to bless your children, your home, your car, your life, your job, your worship, recitation of the quran, your community, your time and so on.
Duas made sincerely from the heart brings barakah into your home and your lives.
“ ‘O Allah guide me among those You have guided, pardon me among those You have pardoned, befriend me among those You have befriended, bless me in what You have granted”
– Jami` at-Tirmidhi 466

6. Express Shukr (gratitude)
Everything we have is from Allah, so be grateful and thank Allah always. Constantly expressing our gratitude increases barakah in everything we have.
“And when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks, I will grant you increase”
Quran 14:7
7. Be satisfied with the blessings Allah has bestowed upon you
Don’t complain. Accept what you have and be satisfied with it. Whenever we complain about something, we lose the blessings in that.
“The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial. When Allah loves a people He tests them. Whoever accepts that wins His pleasure but whoever is discontent with that earns His wrath.”
– Sunan Ibn Majah 4031
8. Avoid being extravagant
“The extravagant are brethren of the devils, and the devil is ever ungrateful to his Lord.”
Quran 17:27
Don’t be frugal but don’t waste. There is no blessing in being extravagance.
9. Do good deeds
“Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while being a believer, We will grant him a good life—and We will reward them according to the best of what they used to do.”
Quran 16:97.
Every good deed brings divine blessing with it. The more good deed you perform, the more blessing you will earn.
10. Have Taqwa
Have faith and be conscious of Allah swt.
“Had the people of the towns believed and turned righteous, We would have opened for them the blessings of the heaven and the earth”
Quran 7:96
Shaykh Yaser also highlighted what takes barakah away from us. When we commit sins, our rizq is withheld. For example, barakah diminishes if money is earned by cheating in business/trade, by taking riba (interest), etc. In order to receive barakah in our time, wealth, efforts and home, we must hold back from committing any sins.
Let’s practice these simple tips to increase barakah in your home and your life.
